2008 Girl Scouts World Thinking Day
In conjunction with 2008 Girl Scouts “World Thinking Day” topic of“Thinking about Water” the MUA made a presentation for the Parkway Brownies regarding water supply, watershed and pollution.
Educate the Educator, 2008 Teacher’s Workshop
Participation in the annual teacher’s workshop in conjunction with the non-profit group, Peopling of Philadelphia Collaborative Inc. occurred on April 12, 2008. Teachers learned about the history and development of the MUA and its facilities. The lesson included a background of wastewater treatment technologies including those utilized at the MUA, ending with a tour of the Hartford Rd WPCF. Teachers were able to interact with a watershed model demonstration. The teachers left with a myriad of resources for their classes.
Harrington Middle School Tour and Community Service Project, June 8, 2007 MUA personnel assisted 120 8th graders (Trail Blazers) with a community service project. This was a two day project where on the first day the students toured our Hartford Road Water Pollution Control Facility and learned about all MUA systems. The students were then instructed how to install plaques (which read “No Dumping” & Drains to River or Stream”) on township storm drains. On day two MUA personnel met with teachers, parents, & three (3) bus loads of students.
The students were divided into two groups and directed to two locations in the town where MUA personnel were waiting for them. Once the students arrived at their designated area in the town the students were once again broken down into smaller groups. MUA personnel went over a map of the town with the students so they knew what area of town they would be working.
The students were given tools and the plaques and sent off to begin the installation of the plagues to manhole lids. MUA personnel followed each of the groups to ensure that each group had what they needed to get the job done. Approximately 100 plaques were installed by the students.
